Which fireplace is right for my home?
At this time of year there is nothing better than sitting in front of a fire, glass of wine or mug of hot chocolate in hand.
The Client's brief was to maximise the potential of the existing house & the surrounding outdoor entertainment area. In particular, to absorb both the existing 'arcade' at ground level & the wrap-around balcony at 1st flloor level, spaces which were hardly ever used. The main deck was also shifted from the west to the north side and a pergola added to provide the necessary shade & to break the scale of the double storey facade. The existing chlorine pool was also replaced with a 'natural' pool, i.e. no chemicals, with the necessary filtering being done by a finely balanced ecological system in the filtration ponds wrapping around the swimming area. The pool was done by Eco-Pools - see www.ecopoolsonline.com
The house before construction: Main entertainment area on the west with narrow unusable arcade wrapping around living room, balcony at 1st floor level and the chlorine pool in the foreground.
The arrival experience was changed in that the gate was shifted so that one experiences the property from the side first, with a glimpse through the slatted gate to the pool & north-facing entertainment area. The covered porch area creates a space where one can linger, say hello or have a last word while appreciating the higher filtration pond spilling over into the lower pool.
The main en suite bathroom with freestanding bath, medicine cabinet & floating vanity. The specially designed medicine cabinet houses a light above the mirror with a shelf beneath ex. black Rustenburg granite to match the vanity counter top. Both units are made using MDF board finished with 3D thermal foil ' Dark Italian Walnut' with 'wrap' doors to match. (All moisture resistant & easy to clean).
View across pool to north-facing deck, 'light' steel & timber pergola over & slatted timber gate through to the entrance porch on the left
View from garden across deck & 'swimming' pool towards filtration pond behind the stepping stones & the higher filtration pond to the right. New entrance hall also partly visible with gate giving access to garden & pool from entrance porch. New infill timber fencing behind the pool picking up on the theme of expressing the beauty & warmth of timber running throughout the project.
